# KUBO

> KUBO is an open-source IT suite for schools in places where budgets are tight, power is unreliable and the internet barely reaches. It combines three parts that work together: a resilient IT lab of Raspberry Pi workstations, an offline server that hosts a learning library and keeps everything backed up without internet, and a school platform for grades, term reports, timetables, attendance and health records. KUBO has run in schools since 2017 and today powers 5 schools in 2 countries (The Gambia and Uganda), with 154 computers reaching over 4,300 students. It is a nonprofit collaboration between Afrodidact and The Swallow: schools own the hardware, data and software outright, with no licence fees and no vendor lock-in.

Key facts:
- First lab opened in 2017 at The Swallow, a school in Serekunda, The Gambia.
- Deployments: The Swallow, Bakoteh Proper LBS (51-seat solar-powered lab), Albreda LBS and Njaba Kunda LBS in The Gambia; Mid-West High School in Fort Portal, Uganda, which has hosted the national UCE and UACE computer exams.
- Each workstation is a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 in the open KUBO X enclosure, drawing about 30 W per seat, running Raspberry Pi OS with free software (LibreOffice, Scratch, Python, Chromium, VLC).
- The offline server serves the content library and school platform fully offline and syncs when a connection appears.
- Teachers save 5+ hours per month by moving registers, scores and term reports from paper to the platform.
- Hardware designs and software are open source; casings are produced in series (design files available on request).
